A mosquito killing mosquito. The latest weapon against Zika, Dengue and Yellow Fever.

Mosquitos that kill mosquitos. Who would have thought?
We all hate mosquitos. The bites you get in the summer at your bbq, the annoying buzz of a mosquito in a dark bedroom that just won't quit. First world problems. People are also dying in their thousands and being rendered infertile in developing nations. Never fear, help is on the horizon.
The boffins over at the Environmental Protection Agency (which Trump is trying to defund no doubt) have come up with the idea of infecting mosquitos raised in lab with a bacteria (Wolbachia), which they will then set loose to infect other mosquitos carrying diseases which are dangerous to us, like dengue, yellow fever, and the Zika virus. This will save many, many lives, and prevent a great deal of misery.
The infected mosquitoes are Aedes albopictus (ZAP) mosquitoes, which don't bite. The virus won't be dangerous to them. The bad, biting, disease spreading mosquitoes  are called Aedes aegypti.
The ideas is that the bacteria only infects  (bad) mosquitoes with Wolbachia, which is a naturally occurring bacteria, which the bad, biting mosquitoes don't have, and will not have defense against. Endgame = all the bad, biting (Aedes aegypti) mosquitoes die, and we are left with the good Aedes albopictus mosquitoes, which won't kill people and render them infertile. We still will have the annoying buzzing in a dark bedroom that just won't quit.

Whatever will they think of next?

I got my information from  geneticliteracyproject.org. Interesting sight with lots of stuff you wouldn't have thought about. Check it out.
