The photo above is of Gunkanjima, or Battleship Island (of Skyfall fame). Google it. There's some cool pictures. It's an old coal mining island that is now abandoned, apart from all the tourists.
Gunkanjima is one of the 6852 islands in Japan. The Telegraph UK have gone to the trouble of listing 13 of the more 'strange and beautiful' islands in Japan for you to visit.
You can run the whole gamut, with islands about art, 1000s of wild cats, volcanoes, thousands of rabbits, Galapagosish (did I just make up a word?) wildlife, tori gates in the sea, Hokkaido represent, and finally a freaky island of gas masks.
There's some interesting stuff here, some cool photos, and perhaps some planning material for your next holiday.
