2 - Ben Nevis Cemetery

Welcome to the Make Sense blog. What we're going to do here is learn English vocab through photos, taken by myself in the beginning, or with submissions from you beautiful people out there.

I will explain the photo, then break down my explanation in English and Japanese. If you have any questions, please ask. I have also included the phonetics to help pronunciation.

This is a photo of me in the very small cemetery located in the Ben Nevis region of Otago, New Zealand.
The Ben Nevis Valley is on the opposite side of the Remarkables from Queenstown.
While it is still farmed, the valley is a shadow of its former self. Some 150 years ago, gold fever hit the Ben Nevis, and for a period it was a populated, lively, vibrant gold-mining town.
This cemetery, along with the remains of the searches are all that is left to remind visitors of the valley's former glory.
I spent a night camping there, relaxing next to the crystal clear waters of the Nevis River.

単語
cemetery (ˈsɛmɪtri/) noun: a large burial ground, especially one not in a churchyard.

valley (/ˈvali/) noun: low area of land between hills or mountains, typically with a river or stream flowing through it

文法
While it is still farmed, the valley is a shadow of its former self.

Its only ever has an アポストロフィ if it is a 接続詞. A common mistake by native English speakers.

It's a shadow of its former self. = It is a shadow of its former self.

1 - The verandah at my family home.

This photo is of the verandah at my parents’ house. Our family have lived there since 1990. The Whanganui River is in the background. Straight behind the verandah is a cherry tree. It blooms in spring, which is in September/October.
The roof of the verandah is fibreglass, so the sun can come through, but the rain can't.
There is a nice wooden table with chairs, so we can eat our meals out there if we want.
We usually cook inside, but you can see the bbq there which is used a lot in summer.

単語
verandah (vəˈrandə/)  noun: a roofed platform along the outside of a house, level with the ground floor.

bloom (bluːm/) verb: produce flowers; be in flower.
straight (/streɪt/) adverb: in a straight line; directly

fibreglass  (/ˈfʌɪbəɡlɑːs/) noun: a reinforced plastic material composed of glass fibres embedded in a resin matrix.

Our family have lived there since 1990.

have lived  We use the present perfect (現在完了形) here to show something started in the past, and continues in the present. My family started living there in 1990, and still live there now.

since/for When you talk about an activity or state beginning at a particular time in the past you use since (since 1990). If you use for, you are talking about a length of time. (My family have lived there for 28 years.
since = starting point, for = length of time

Disneyland will build a new theme park in Tokyo.

News from nerdist.com that Disneyland is building a new theme park in Tokyo.

Disneyland opened first in 1983 (and I was there) in Tokyo. After it became stupidly popular, they went on to open DisneySea in 2001.
Now that both are packed full of people every day of the year, and the folk at Disney see how popular Universal Studios Japan in Osaka is, Disneyland has decided to move on its third theme park in Japan.
It will be in Tokyo, and the theme of the park will be the culture of Japan.
Good news for you Disney fans.

Also, I learned today that the Disneyland company doesn't actually own Disneyland or DisneySea. They are owned by a company called Oriental Land Company, but Disney has full creative control over the parks.

What Japanese words are understood by foreigners? You may be surprised.

This surprising survey on what Japanese words foreigners abroad understand has listed the top 49 Japanese words that foreigners overseas understand. I'm not sure how the list was made, and the website whatjapanthinks.com is a bit unsure too, but it's an interesting list all the same. Any surprises for you there? How many do you know?

Funny New Zealand Police Recruitment video.

Here is a video that was made to try and get more people to apply to join the Police in New Zealand. The video is great, as it shows the diversity in New Zealand, with so many cultures. It also presents the Police as part of the team to keep the community safe. Very different to the image of the police here I think.
And they have no guns.

If you like this, Share and Like.  Thank you.
